Greetings from our new home in Portland, Oregon!

After 66 years living in the greater Los Angeles area, I have moved to the Pacific Northwest. Surprised? I sure was, as Douglas and I began discussions a couple years ago about what our Next Chapter together might look like and where we might land. With his impending retirement, this felt like the time to explore options.

So exploring is what we did. We were drawn to the Pacific Northwest for many reasons, but particularly to be closer to family — two lovely sisters and their spouses plus many nieces and nephews in Oregon and southern Idaho. We look forward to many family gatherings now that we are all within a day’s drive.

As Douglas and I explored different cities and regions, we were consistently drawn to the beauty of the green landscapes, rivers, waterfalls, stunning coasts and majestic mountains. After so many years in beloved SoCal, we thought some rain and cooler temperatures would make for a lovely Next Chapter.

Why Portland?

After much searching, we decided on Portland because it met so many of the criteria on our list, and its vibrant arts community offers excellent music and theater performances. Douglas is particularly excited about the abundant nature trails and easy access to other urban areas in the Northwest and Canada.

It is very important for me to continue my freelance work as organist, conductor and collaborative pianist, and Portland will afford me those opportunities. I have already made several professional connections and look forward to this part-time work, as the muse calls.

The Move

We purchased a lovely home on Ash Creek, southwest Portland, with a forest back yard — green, more green and serene. We moved in four days before Christmas and have (almost) completely unpacked.

This was a huge decision, and the physical distance from so many long-time friends in SoCal was an important part of our discernment. And yet, we have already found ways to stay connected, grateful for the various technological options and looking forward to those occasions of being together in-person, whether Portland or Los Angeles.

We are excited about our Next Chapter in Portland.
