Remarks by James Walker at the dedication of the James Walker Choir Room • May 2, 2018 with Canterbury Choir and May 3, 2018 with Coventry Choir

It is wonderful to be here with all of you, and I want to say a few words about what this plaque and the naming of the choir room means to me. I have five points, but they’re short (mostly)!

1) This is a great personal honor which I hold deep in my heart, with immense gratitude.

2) What is equally true is that I strongly believe that this plaque and the naming of the choir room is not all about me.

It is a celebration of what ALL of us created together over those 34 years. Those of us here right now, and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of others, from the youngest Minisinger to the oldest adult choir members and those who have passed into the Greater Life and now sing in the celestial choirs.

All those who gathered in this room, week after week — often facing huge life challenges — and through that dedication to a rigorous and disciplined approach to music-making and a tenacious belief that we always strive to offer our best to God and to Her people, and a conviction that we care for each other, in community. Through that work this has become a Holy Place — a place of healing and renewal.

We bring our individual gifts together to create, to lead, to inspire, to bring people closer to God, to bring beauty and joy into the world.

3) It didn’t begin in 1983; we have received a legacy here long before I arrived. So this moment also honors our musical and liturgical ancestors.

4) This isn’t simply a celebration of the past; it is absolutely relevant to this present moment. The greatest honor and joy for me right now is that you all are still here, offering your time and talents, week in and week out. Thank you.

5) And it isn’t just about the past and the present. It is a celebration of what the future will bring, that the ministry we have been privileged to lead together, and that all of you continue to nurture: that firm foundation, built on love, will continue and thrive in the future.

Please know that always the music ministry of All Saints Church is in my heart and in my prayers, as I hope that I continue to be in your hearts and in your prayers.

If this plaque becomes some dusty piece of metal on the wall, a sentimental remembrance of some guy who used to work here, it would make me incredibly sad.

Please continue to make this room a living sacrament, a vibrant holy place of joy, love, beauty and transformation.

I know that you will, and that makes my heart glad.
